This letter just arrived from our ministry partner Brother Beausang Catholic School in the desperately poor region of Embul-bul, Kenya. There, Cross Catholic Outreach provides education and daily meals to 800 impoverished students, as well as supplies teacher and staff salaries for compassionate and hardworking people like Esther Mwangi. She writes:
Thanks to Cross Catholic, Esther, a widow, is able to provide for her five children through the salary she earns at Brother Beausang Catholic School.
I was widowed six years ago when I was expecting my fifth child. My husband was the sole breadwinner for our family. But despite my husband’s death I knew life had to go on. I had to be strong and work hard to provide for my family’s basic needs.
Then help came when the women at my parish recommended me for a job at Brother Beausang Catholic School as a cook. Thanks to Cross Catholic Outreach who provides us with teacher and staff salaries, this is where I am now employed. I have been working at the school for the last five years and I have been enjoying it very much. I am also happy that this job makes me able to meet the basic needs of my family.
But working here has not only impacted my family. It has impacted my spiritual journey as well. I always wanted to help those less fortunate in society. Working at a school where most of the 800 children are either orphans or partial orphans has helped me meet this aspiration of being involved with the poor. Every day I go to bed and I have satisfaction because I am serving others. This has given me strength to move on.
I believe it is through serving other people that I meet God’s needs. I have much joy as I perform my duty as a cook, thanks to you. I always remember how Jesus fed the 5,000 men and try as much as possible to be an example of Christ and serve the children with love and care.
