Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.– 1 Thessalonians 5:18
I think the poor are the most grateful people I’ve ever encountered. Something as simple as a cup of clean drinkable water is celebrated! Poor families understand what it means to rely on God for their every need; and when he provides their daily bread, they praise him for his faithfulness. They don’t despair over what they don’t have – they rejoice over how God has blessed them!
My husband and I were recently displaced from our home due to Hurricane Harvey; and through this experience, we are learning more about what it means to give thanks in all circumstances. Our house is still in disrepair, and it will be months before our lives are back to normal — but we have so much to be thankful for! When I’m tempted to feel sorry for myself, I remember the example set by my friends around the world who live day-to-day with simple faith that God will sustain them.
Choosing to give thanks in all circumstances will fill your heart with joy like nothing else can. The poor know that, and now I’ve experienced it too. Praise the Lord for all he has done!
